Adjectives are words that describe people, places, animals, and objects. In English grammar, we change the form of an adjective depending on how many things we are comparing.

What Are Degrees of Comparison?

There are three different levels, or “degrees,” used to compare things:

  • Positive Degree: Used to describe just one thing with no comparison.
  • Comparative Degree: Used to compare exactly two things.
  • Superlative Degree: Used to compare three or more things.

Basic Rules for Changing Adjectives

Here is how you change the words based on their spelling:

  1. Short Adjectives Add -er to compare two things and -est to compare more than two.
  • tall → taller → tallest
  • fast → faster → fastest
  1. Adjectives Ending in “y” Change the “y” to “i” and then add -er or -est.
  • happy → happier → happiest
  1. Long Adjectives For longer words, put more or most in front of the adjective.
  • interesting → more interesting → most interesting
  1. Irregular Adjectives Some words do not follow a pattern and change completely.
  • good → better → best

These rules will help you complete the sentences in your worksheet correctly.
